Tourist Guide to the Lesbos Island

Mytilene
Mytilene is the capital of the island where tourists can visit an interesting archaeological and a folk museum. Tourists can visit the Kastro, which dates dates from the fourteenth century and a third century Roman theater.
Tourist sites in the Lesbos Island
The best part of the Lesbos Island is the Kalanis Bay which is in the middle of the island. You can visit this picturesque villages of Molyvo and Kalloni. In the old town you can still see the walls dating back from the eighth century and a Byzantine castle. Not far from here is Petra, a village where you can visit a monastery from the eighteenth century, built in the honor of the Virgin Mary (Panagia Glykofilousas).
The Limnos Monastery keeps invaluable treasures in its museum. Some parts of the monastery can be visited only by men. The Ag Raphael Monastery is open to the public.
In the village of Mantamado tourists will discover a church dedicated to Agios Taxiarchon. The picturesque village of Mithymna is located on the seashore. The village is full of traditional houses and narrow streets. Eressos is another nice village where the poet Sappho and Theophraste lived. Tourists can visit here an archaeological and a folklore museum, but also a petrified forest.
Beaches of the Island of Lesbos
Kalloni and Petra are two magnificent beaches on the Lesbos Island, ideal for families with children. Agios Isidoros and Skala are also ideal for bathing. If you are looking for more isolated beaches, head to the southern coast of the island to the Vatera beach, one of the most islotaed and longest beaches on the whole seaside.
Nighlife
Lesbos has a very active nightlife, you will find here bars and discos in the capital, Mytilene, in Mithymania and in Skala. Tourists who want to dance can try the Gatelouzi outdoor disco. Club Machine is the main club in the village of Petra.
Shopping and restaurants
In the Lesbos Island you will find everything you need. The typical souvenirs, Greek olive oil and ouzo are the most famous products in Lesbos. At Plomari you will find one of the oldest ouzo distilleries. The local cuisine is based on traditional Greek recipes, with a lot of fish, seafood, olive oil and vegetables.
