Crete is a popular tourist attraction but also an island with a very rich history. It has many pieces of art from various time periods that are worth to be seen. Today we would like to present the top 7 interesting museums in Crete located in different parts of the island.

These seven museums include: the Municipal Museum of the Battle of Crete and the National Resistance in Heraklion, the Natural History Museum of Crete, the Historical Museum of Crete, the Heraklion Museum of Visual Arts, the Maritime Museum of Chania, the Historical Archives Museum of Crete and the History and Folklore Museum of Rethymno

The Natural History Museum of Crete

The Natural History Museum is located near the port of Heraklion and is dedicated to the natural environment of the Island of Crete and the Mediterranean region. The museum has five departments, specialized in zoology, botany, anthropology, paleontology, geology and minerologie. The interesting exhibits of the museum include  the skeleton of an animal called the Deinotherium giganteum, which is considered to be one of the largest creatures on earth or the interactive seismic table.

The Municipal Museum of the Battle of Crete and the National Resistance in Heraklion

This Cretan museum was opened in the city of Heraklion at the proposal of the municipalities following the success of an exhibition of documents from the period of the German occupation (1941-1944). It was inaugurated in 1991and exhibits hundreds of authentic photographs of the battle of Crete and the activity of the Greek Resistance and also books, historical works and studies about this period. You can also see some personal items, weapons, war memorabilia, military costumes and other equipment used in the Second World War.

The Historical Archives Museum of Crete

The Historical Archives Museum of Crete is housed in a beautiful neo-classical style building, featuring a rich collection of folk materials and objects that relate to the history of Crete. Here you will find historical documents, maps, coins, religious objects, photographs, being the second biggest archive after the General Archives of the Greek State.

The Historical Museum of Crete

This prestigious Institute of Culture in Heraklion was founded in 1953 and invites you to a journey in the history of Crete, from early Christianity to the present. In the Historical Museum of Crete you can see collections of the medieval and Renaissance time period, about the Cretans struggle for freedom, about folklore and personalities of the island.

The Heraklion Museum of Visual Arts

The Heraklion Museum of Visual Arts is a space dedicated to culture, a meeting place of artists and art lovers. The museum contains Cretan art exhibitions, both contemporary and from other periods.

The History and Folklore Museum of Rethymno

This cultural institution presents a rich collection of examples of the local art of weaving, national and regional costumes embroidered and decorated, ceramic art, paintings and other objects used in everyday life of the inhabitants of the Island of Crete.

The Maritime Museum of Chania

Housed in the Firkas Fortress , the Maritime Museum of Chania was founded in 1973. The two-story building contains 13 collections that present the maritime history of Crete from antiquity to the Battle of Crete. The museum includes models of boats, items recovered from shipwrecks, documents about the Marina of Greece, navigation tools, audiovisual materials, and many other things.
