The region of Chania in Crete is one of the most desired destinations for tourists visiting Greece and they are usually captivated by the traditional style of the villages and the environmental purity.

Apart from the picturesque town of Chania, this area of Crete has many beautiful mountain villages and seaside settlements. The city of Kissamos, the resort village of Paleochora and the village of Sfakia are the most famous settlements of them. All these managed to escape mass tourism and to maintain their authenticity.

Kissamos

Kissamos is a beautiful city located at 42 km in the west of Chania and it is one of the top 3 settlements of Chania. It is the seat of the  county with the same name and has about 3000 inhabitants. Kastelli Kissamou (Kissamos) is surrounded by a beautiful landscape, being built along a quiet beach with golden sand mixed with pebbles. The small town was not so spoiled by the excessive tourism, so it is not a crowded place. The city of Kastelli Kissamou is located on the site where the ancient city of Kissamos used to be. This ancient city was the port of the ancient city  of Polyrenia, the oldest Dorian city of Crete, located 7 km south of Kissamos, and was the center of the maritime trade of Western Crete. From Kastelli Kissamou can visit the interesting archaeological sites of Polyrenia and Falassarna, the impressive gorges of Topolia, the Gramvoussa Islands called Pirate Islands, the idyllic lagoon of Balos, the superb sandy beaches with their crystal clear waters and numerous other charming medieval villages of Chania.

Paleochora

Paleochora is a beautiful summer resort, located in southwestern Crete at 75 km from the city of Chania, near the sea. The village is built in a way that separates the sea in two, forming two beaches: one sandy and one with pebbles, both havig crystal clear water. One of the beaches is always protected from the wind, so you can choose to enjoy swimming or windsurfing. It is a top settlement of Chania, a lively village with a population of about 2000 inhabitants and is very busy during the season, but still has retreats for those who want to escape the crowds.

Sfakia

Sfakia is the capital of the still wild area of Skafia, one of the mountainous regions of Crete. It is located in the White Mountains, which are very tall and possesses some of the many beautiful and impressive gorges, the most famous being the Samaria Gorge. The beautiful settlement of Hora Sfakion (Skafia) is located at 70 km from Chania, on the southwest coast of Crete, and is an excellent starting point for exploring the south coast of Crete. The village very well retains its traditional mark and authenticity and the calm is interrupted only a few times in the afternoon at the arrival of the visitors of the Samaria Gorge coming with small boats, but they leave the village soon enough, so the peace returns in several minutes .
