Crete has many museums, archaeological sites, landscapes and places to visit, being one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean.

For everyone that was once in Crete the names Knossos, Phaestos, Malia are already familiar and evoke many memories.

You will find many tourist attractions depending on the city and each of them is worth at least a few hours of the time spent in Crete. Today we would like to present you the most famous archeological museums in Crete.

 

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the most prestigious museums in the world. It has many exhibits from every era of the Cretan history, covering a period of over 5500 years. The Minoan collection contains unique examples of art, some of them being real masterpieces.

This Cretan archeological museum was founded in the19th century and today has 20 rooms, where you will find sculptures, sarcophagus, tools, inscriptions, seals, and other items of interest. Among the most important exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is the Disc of Phaistos, that is a clay disc with models that were not deciphered until today, and the bull frescoes or the Kamares vessels.

The Archaeological Museum of Chania

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the old center of Chania near the Venetian harbor and it is housed in the church of St. Francis since 1963. At the museum you can admire the exhibits discovered in the city, which are trying to recreate the history of western Crete.

Here you can see the ceramics and carved stone objects, sculptures, metal objects, jewelry and coins, which are presented in chronological order. The exhibited objects belong to the Neolithic, Minoan, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine time periods.

The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno

Beginning with the year 1991 the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno is housed in a building in the front of the Fortezza Fortress. Its exhibits present the history of prefecture of Rethymno starting with the Neolithic time period until the Roman domination. All of the objects are organized in chronological order, which include jewelry, tools, figurines, statues, coins or war objects.

The Archaeological Museum of Ierapetra

The Ierapetra Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest museums in Crete. It  was founded in the late 19th century. Among the collections of this Cretan museum you can admire works of art from the Minoan time period (sarcophagi, lamps, vases, etc.), geometric figures, archaic art, vases and figurines from the Classical and Hellenistic time periods, Roman statues and funeral inscriptions and votives from the Roman and Greek time periods.
