Ancient City Santorini Island

The name of the Ancient Thera or Ancient Thira comes from the leaders of the island in the past: Theras. The territory is inhabited since the 9th century BC. In 1895, the German archaeologist Friedrich Hiller decided that it was time to begin to study closely the ancient city and discover more about it. So there were made excavations in the area until 1904. But the excavations did not stop here, because between 1961 and 1982 N. Zapheiropoulos came here. What was found in that period is exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Fira.

Today, the Ancient City is opened to the general public as a beautiful and special tourist attraction. You can get there on the road that starts from Kamari. The road was built in the early 50s of the twentieth century because of the visit of the German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
